Year 7 and the Severn Valley

This year is the 200th anniversary of British Rail Travel and to celebrate a group of Year 7s have been enjoying all things trains!

Following a hard-fought competition to produce train-themed artwork, 30 pupils were selected to attend a visit to Severn Valley Railway on 2 July, accompanied by Miss Holmes, Mr. Morton, Mrs. Ablett and Miss Cherry – they had a fantastic day!

Once they had arrived at Kidderminster Railway Station (by train, of course) students explored the Kidderminster Railway Museum before boarding Inspiration 200 – a travelling museum showcasing the ‘History and Future’ of railways, railway careers and Railway-themed STEM activities.  This included opportunities to design and test train wheels, build bridges, explore the impact of the landscape on railways, and to practice their computer-programming skills on a model train set.

The true highlight of the day, however, was their private ride on a heritage steam train – pupils were able to discuss the mechanics of the train with the driver and the history of the SVR with the enthusiastic volunteers, and even saw a baby rhino (who is a resident at West Midlands Safari Park which we travelled past) during their journey!

Before returning home pupils enjoyed a well-deserved ice cream in the sunshine as reward for their exemplary representation of the school during their trip.  On their return journey, staff commented on how lucky they all were to have had such a wonderful day!
