The 2025 Foley Lecture

Thursday 8 May saw the return of the annual Foley Lecture.  Historically a significant date in the School calendar, this event sees a distinguished speaker invited to deliver a talk on a topic of their choosing.

Many of our Sixth Formers joined governors, feoffees colleagues and guests at Hagley Hall for dinner, networking and the Lecture itself.  Our speaker was Quentin Letts, writer, critic, broadcaster and journalist is possibly best know as a parliamentary sketch writer.  His speech “The Eternal Comedy of Politics” was something of a whistle stop tour through literature from the Gospel of Luke to Cranmer’s Bible, and from Swift to Gilbert and Sullivan.  He quite compellingly put the case for speaking truth to power and maintaining a gentle but not unhealthy disregard for overbearing rules.

The tradition of the Foley Lecture has always been to bring together students, staff and those affiliated with our fine school to share a meal, discuss current affairs and benefit from attending a lecture on a subject of contemporary or historic interest from a guest of national or international standing.
