Three of our Sixth Form scientists won prizes having entered Cambridge University’s Girton Medicine Prize.
This competition is an opportunity for Year 12 students considering pursing medical careers to research and present beyond the curriculum, using the topic set by our prize convenors, as their focus. The title for 2025 was: ‘Plants have been used for therapeutic purposes for thousands of years. With reference to a single plant of your choice, discuss its medicinal use, past, present and future.’
This Prize is set up to encourage students to read beyond the school syllabus, and research material under the general topic outlined, and for the first time with video submissions as verbal communication in Medicine is so important, in terms of speaking to patients and the wider public. The judges are looking for a focussed talk which clearly and concisely explains the concept, and can be understood by a range of viewers.
Very well done indeed to Aleeza for winning first prize! Her talk was on the properties of neem. Congratulations also to Sama who placed third for her presentation on the properties of frankincense. Sharandeep received was awarded “highly commended” for a submission on the properties of aloe vera. These are tremendous achievements to be very proud of.
