The third annual Spearhead Public Speaking Competition took place on Tuesday 9 December.

The event was extremely well attended, with family and friends arriving in their numbers to support our brave competitors.  The audience were treated to a number of thought-provoking speeches, with each year group being given a theme to base their speech upon.

Year 7 competitors, whose theme was sport, gave a diverse array of speeches ranging from why sport does more harm than good all the way through to the moral dilemmas of horse racing.  Year 8's theme was health, with audiences learning all about the benefits of home remedies through to the virtues of 3D printed organs.  Next was Year 9, who wrestled with the developments in tech.  Audiences were treated to engaging speeches about how AI is revolutionising agriculture and how Elon Musk is changing the face of transport.  Finally, the Seniors delivered absorbing speeches on education: with philosophical speeches about the role of feminism in schools, why we should ditch Shakespeare and whether schools get unfair criticism.

Judges had a hard time deliberating but the year group winners are as follows:

  • Year 7 - Andrei
  • Year 8 - Charlie S
  • Year 9 - Mahek
  • Seniors - Molly G

The overall winner of the competition, with the highest combined judges' score was Charlie S.

Thanks to all of those involved and of course, we go again next year!
