Admissions

Join Us

We offer admission for three different types of boarding places: Termly, Weekly or Flexi-boarding (boys only).

Termly  boarders reside each and every night of term, going home during their half-term holidays. They may go home on exeat weekends, although they may go home more frequently if they chose to do so.

Weekly boarders do everything that the termly boarders do except they go home at weekends.

Flexi-boarders do everything that the full or weekly boarders do except routinely sleep at school. They may arrive for breakfast and depart shortly before lights out and they are required to stay overnight 3-4 times per term.

Typically, Termly and Weekly boarders join us in Years 7, 9 and 12, and Flexi-boarders in Year 7. If your son is starting another year group, do contact us because we do have occasional places. We’re more than happy and experienced at welcoming pupils in Years 8 and 10.

There are also day student places available in Year 7 (boys only) and in the Sixth Form (for both boys and girls).

Meet Arun, one of the youngest boarders to join OSH this academic year, and find out what he thinks of boarding.

Admissions to OSH are regulated by the Governors’ Admissions Policy and the statutory School Admissions Code, which support our commitment to provide a supportive, stimulating and caring environment in which all of our students are able to grow, both individually and as part of a community.

We strongly recommend that you come and see us by attending one or more of our open events, by making an individual appointment to meet the Headmaster and have a tour of the school or by calling our admissions office on 01384 817325 so that we can talk you through our admissions process.

Year 7

Admission at Year 7 is for boys and can either be for Termly boarding, Weekly boarding or Flexi-boarding places. Every boarder has access to the same facilities.

All prospective Year 7 pupils are assessed to determine whether they are suitable for boarding. This is such an important part of the admissions process because we need to be confident that each child will be happy here.

For Termly and Weekly boarders, there is no academic test.

Prospective Year 7 Flexi-boarders are required to complete a computer based entry test – the Old Swinford Hospital Online Test (OSHOT). This is taken in the September before the year of admission, but don’t panic as it’s not as daunting as it may sound. It’s a short test designed to be novel and engaging and to assess certain skills in a more objective and far less stressful way than traditional IQ type tests.

Day places are also available, and there is no academic test.

As a boarding school, OSH does not have a local catchment area. If you live in England, don’t forget to include OSH on the Local Authority Common Application Form for Secondary school transfer as well as applying to us directly. This isn’t necessary if you live outside of England, you’ll just need to complete our own application form and communicate directly with us.

Find out about all the fun there is to be had at OSH, from our resident boarder and budding musician, Fergus, who is enjoying his first year in Prospect House.

Year 9

Admission at Year 9 is for boys and can either be for Termly or Weekly boarding.

Boarding places are offered to candidates who successfully prove their aptitude and suitability to board following an interview, which is supported by a school reference.

If you would like to come and take a look around the school at one of our open days, or would like more information regarding the admissions process, please call admissions on 01384 817325 or fill in the enquiry form at the bottom of the page.

Meet Nico, our international boarder, and discover how attending OSH has helped him to achieve his ambition to learn fluent English.

Year 12

There are two types of admissions at Year 12, each with its own procedure.

We accept Year 12 Termly or Weekly male boarders and, in the first instance, suitability for boarding is assessed via an interview and a school reference. Pupils who are offered a place must gain at least seven GCSEs Grade C or above, including Maths and English (or an agreed equivalent if they’re an overseas candidate). We also recommend that a minimum of a B grade at GCSE is achieved in any subject or related subject which is to be studied at A Level.

Day places are available to male and female candidates. These places are awarded based on predicted GCSE grades as provided by the candidate’s school. There are also six places available for those with a particular aptitude in music or sport. You can find more information on this entry level in our Admission Policy.

If you have any questions or would like to receive further information, please contact The Registrar on 01384 817325 or fill in the enquiry form at the bottom of the page.

Fees

As a state boarding school, we are able to provide an environment which offers similar advantages to a private boarding education but at just a fraction of the cost. This is because the UK government pays tuition fees for pupils and the fees we set cover boarding.

Visitors often comment that our facilities surpass those of many independent schools and we are able to attract staff with academic pedigree, rounded interests and a genuine commitment to boarding.

Open Days

We warmly invite you to visit OSH.

There’s simply no better way to experience what life at OSH is like, other than by sampling it first-hand and meeting the pupils and their teachers.

Our open events give you a chance to explore OSH and to meet pupils who enjoy studying (and boarding) here before you make up your mind. It’s a great way to get a sense of why OSH is truly a place to ‘discover who you can be’. Furthermore, you’ll have an opportunity to hear the Headmaster explain what OSH is all about and to meet the staff who make this philosophy a reality.

We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming open mornings and evenings. No booking is necessary, but we would advise you to arrive as early as possible so you can maximise your time.

Every day is an open day

Don’t worry if you cannot attend an open event.  Fill in the enquiry form below and we’ll be happy to arrange a tour.  Wherever possible, the Headmaster will either accompany you on part of your tour or arrange a time to meet with you when you are on site.
