Year 8 Violinist Competes in Northfield Music Festival

June 9th, 2017

Congratulations to Thomas Macalino on collecting two prizes at the Northfield Festival of Music and Speech.

Thomas, who is in Year 8, was awarded a Distinction in the category ‘Bournville Boys’ which is an Open Instrumental Ensemble competition. He had to learn Shostakovich’s Spanish Dance beforehand and then play the piece with around 10 other musicians, competing against three other groups.

In the Violin, Viola, Cello or Double Bass Grade 6 category, Thomas was ‘Commended’ after playing the 5th Air Varie by Dancla.

Speaking on his achievement, Head of Music Ms Downes said “I am delighted for Thomas. These results are a testament to his natural musicianship and hard work on the violin”.

“I love playing music” said Thomas.  “It is one of my main hobbies and I was excited to enter the Northfield Music Competition.”

In the Adjudicator’s remarks, Thomas was praised for his ‘understanding of musical detail’ and ‘crisp and clean staccato’.
