After hours of planning, preparation, deliberation, building and testing, the first OSH Inter-house Robot Wars was held today.
The six teams, representing each boarding house, were given a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 kit, which combines the versatility of the LEGO building system with advanced technology. It was then up to the teams, devoting hours at lunchtime and after school in the ICT Suite, to put their creative and engineering skills to the test.
Included in the kit is a programmable brick which serves as the control centre and power station for the robot. Teams were able to download a special app to program the robots to perform a variety of tasks. Anything is possible from how to solve a Rubik’s cube (not necessary in this challenge!) to simply following a line.
After the navigational, competitive and damage assessment round Foley House were announced as the winners. In second place was Dudley and in third Place was Potter.
Mr Adey, who organised the competition, praised the teams for their efforts. “The boys have been able to learn about robotics and programming in an interactive and enjoyable way. I hope that by creating their robots and participating they will develop an interest in robotics and engineering, possibly preparing themselves for future careers in these industries.”
