‘Remote’ by Stef Smith is about protest, power and protecting yourself. In the play, a girl called Antler steps out of her front door and throws her phone on the ground. She stamps on it. She then climbs the tallest tree in the park. She doesn’t want to be found, not by anyone. Seven teenagers’ lives all intertwine over the course of a single evening as they make their way through the park on a seemingly normal autumn night.
Around 230 youth theatres and schools have been taking part in the festival and only 10 groups will be selected to perform at the closing festival in July at the National Theatre, London. Performing in London is a fantastic opportunity, but only one part of the whole festival, which aims to inspire 13-19 year olds with high-quality playwriting and give companies the knowledge, skills and confidence to bring the play to life.
