James Kelly completed his first solo flight and passed his air law exam with 94% the day after his 16th Birthday.
This is a remarkable achievement as you have to be 16 years of age to fly solo and this was recognised by the assessors at Westbeach Flight Academy, Wolverhampton Halfpenny Green Airport, who were so impressed that they awarded James with his Silver Wings. These are normally only given with the Private Pilots’ Licence. This means James should achieve his Gold Wings, usually reserved for commercial pilots, with his PPL.
James is currently in Year 11 at OSH and a member of the Air Cadets. He is working towards his Private Pilots’ Licence which involves 45 hours of flying time, 10 of which must be solo. He started flying when he was 13 and hopes to join the RAF when he leaves the Sixth Form to fly either fast jets or cargo planes. His long term plans are to do 22 years’ service with the RAF and then become a commercial pilot.
Congratulations James and good luck!
