Owen Williams and Mr Anthony Green attended the 2013 Annual Dinner of The Forty Club in the Long Room at Lord’s in November. HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, Patron of the Club, was principal guest and the two speakers were Carl Openshaw and Mike Gatting OBE, President of the MCC. Both gave amusing and entertaining speeches.
On behalf of Old Swinford Hospital, Owen, who plays for the 1st XI, accepted a Forty Club Shield as the West Midlands’ district winners of the Forty Club Trophy from Mike Gatting.
Speaking after the event, 16-year-old Owen said “this was a fantastic experience for me, not only to be invited to receive this prestigious Shield on behalf of the School, but to meet Prince Phillip and cricketing legend Mike Gatting in such an iconic setting. It was an inspirational first visit to Lord’s and I am looking forward to the new season and our annual fixture against the XL club.”
The Forty Club (XL) played the OSH 1st XV in June and throughout the day, OSH was assessed by the match manager and Umpire for The Forty Club Trophy. The two main categories were Spirit of Cricket qualities (sportsmanship, captaincy, general turnout and behaviour on and off the field), and collective and individual skills (fielding, batting, bowling and teamwork). OSH was then selected as one of 12 district winners to be considered for the national Forty Club Trophy 2013.
Master in charge of Cricket Mr Anthony Green said “We are delighted that the quality of cricket at OSH has been recognised by the Forty Club whose aim is ‘to take cricket to schools’ by offering schools’ fixtures against experienced cricketers, most of whom will have played at county or national level. This Shield recognised not only the 1st XI team, but everyone involved in hosting the match, from the groundsmen, coaches and amazing catering staff.
“Owen was selected for an outstanding innings of 72 not out, allowing OSH 1st XV to draw with the XL Club” he concluded.
