Following a major refurbishment and re-design programme, Old Swinford Hospital’s junior boarding house, Prospect, re-opened at the start of the Michaelmas Term 2013 in time for the new Year 7 intake.
The existing building has been enhanced by a sympathetically designed modern extension to complement the existing traditional brickwork. There is a new entrance, new roof and state of the art lighting, heating and power. The internal space has been reconfigured to create an easy flow through the building. The majority of boarding spaces are located on the first floor, with the socialising and working areas such as the common room, IT room and boot room situated on the ground floor. The tutor’s flat and matron’s office are now on the ground floor to aid monitoring and casual surveillance of the common areas.
Prospect also has a new Housemaster, Mrs Jenny Cooke, who is only the second female Housemaster in the history of the School. Mrs Cooke, aged 37, is married with one son and will be assisted by experienced matron Mrs Emma Leek.
Speaking after the first month in her new job looking after 58 boys in the brand new boarding House, Mrs Cooke said: “We had a hectic start, but all the boys and their parents have been fantastic. The boys have quickly settled into life in Prospect House and have been eager to meet the demands and challenges that boarding brings. They have built up new friendship groups and I am delighted with the array of talent we have in the house from all the students”.
